Hi Matt, having been in a job testing in calibrated machines this type of system in the 1990s, where we tested all this for the commonwealth government, the failures we got were always the strap, rope or cable where it went around the pin or shackle. Also a simple bush 25mm diameter and 49mm long with a suitable centre whole fore the pin to go through doubles the breaking load and because the pin is now in shear (loaded right to the edges) it would take around 30 tonne to damage it, and by then you will have bent and destroyed your towbar and chassis. The other problem is the sharp edges of the receiver. A piece of 50mm pvc pipe heated and shaped to push in fixes that and a piece of 1/2 inch galv water pipe 49mm long makes a good bush. Owned lots and broken many but have never been unable to get home, even if it’s weeks late after repairs, recovery, or sometimes fixing washed out roads. Travel safe, have fun, and respect the bush.

  2. I’ve extracted hundreds of vehicles using a snatch strap pinned into my receiver hitch. Not an exaggeration. Some of the pulls were extreme. I’ve broken at least 10 snatch straps in 30 years. I now have multi layer 2 inch straps with nice stretch and am wiser about how much force is needed. Never bent a pin. I did round off the sharp edges of the receiver to prevent strap damage. Easy to do with a die grinder and carbide bit.

  3. I reckon if you bend the pin, you are applying more force to the recovery than you should be anyway. Some recovery boards and time spent on a shovel are a much safer way than just reefing a vehicle out.
